Some wonderful Sherlock Holmes stories:

Sins of the Father by Pompey
A case involving the disappearance of two young girls, with its roots in Holmes's past, causes difficulties for both Holmes and Watson. Based on 2 of KCS's 221-B drabbles -- "A Battle" and "Blinking".

Doctor John Watson, Police Surgeon series by Bartimus Crotchety

A series of lengthy fics that hold a special place in my heart, these are about Watson during the Great Hiatus (and up through EMPT). The Watson portrayed here is intelligent, loyal, brave beyond measure, capable, deadly, full of wry humour and deep compassion, and I love him intensely. And his friendship with Lestrade in particular and the Yarders as a whole is wonderful. If all of that were not enough, the mysteries in them (and the threat from Moran that links underneath the whole series) are well-plotted and engaging. READ THEM NOW.

Doctor John Watson, Police Surgeon: Scotland Yard
Scotland Yard is struggling. They have cases they cannot solve and people are dying as a result...they need help. John Watson is struggling. He lost his best friend, his wife, and his health...he needs a purpose. The criminals have a new force to fear.

Doctor John Watson, Police Surgeon: Scotland Yard 2
To save his sanity, John Watson became a Yarder. He is now their top man in autopsy, and has become their chief investigative asset. However, there is a brilliant man posing as Sherlock Holmes in London, and he wants his Boswell at any cost!

Doctor John Watson, Police Surgeon: Scotland Yard 3
Doctor John Watson has very few things left that he values, his reputation is one. Suddenly, he is being tarnished by an all too familiar face from his past. Someone demanding his help before the fog rolls in and the killer stalking him strikes again.

Doctor John Watson, Police Surgeon: Scotland Yard 4
A year ago a new killer stalked the East End. Baffling the Yard at every turn he left five dead. Shaken by their inability to capture him, the Yard turned to Doctor Watson. A new body turns up with the same trademarks. Can a very ill Watson prevail?

Doctor John Watson, Police Surgeon: Scotland Yard: 5
This is the story of how the bravest and most singular person I have ever met, took down the most dangerous man in London, Colonel Jack Moran. In spite of what you might have heard, that man was not Sherlock Holmes. This is the true Empty House.

My computer wasn't working for a while. Which was stressful. Having it back once again, I am celebrating by making lists because I love lists.

Favourite characters from favourite fandoms! First up: Star Wars and comic books. More to come!
Read more...Collapse )
You know what movie needs fic? Dragon (Wu Xia).

Dick/Babs (They are my true OTP. They've definitely both been in other, good relationships -- I have a head canon that Dick is panromantic demisexual -- but they are meant to be together in the end.)

one-sided Harvey/Bruce (One-sided in every context Two Face can offer. I 100% believe that DA Harvey Dent had a total crush on Bruce, which Bruce either didn't notice or ignored. Two Face Harvey Dent furiously will not acknowledge this.)

Clark/Lois (Need I really say more?)

Harley/Ivy (ALWAYS AND FOREVER. I will accept the ocassional inclusion of Selina.)

To be fair, I ship a lot of pairings in the DC universe(s). But these are my favourites.

Also, just favourite relationships in a non-romantic way:

Dick & Damian, Dick & Jason, the Robins together, Alfred and his "grandsons", Jim and Barbara Gordon, Young Justice friends.
As long as I'm on about Jim/Alfred in Gotham... Here are two more recs:

In Case of Emergency by FreshBrains
“Listen to me. I will do whatever it takes to keep this family safe. That means Master Bruce, Selina, and you.”

All Part of the Service by devera
Sometimes Jim just needs to get away from the war, even when he doesn't know it.

This fic is a thing of beauty. It is a perfect blending of the tv Gotham into the comic/cartoon universe, through a mixture of Babs' and Jim's perspective so that you get past and present. Sad and wonderful.

the children we once were by bessemerprocess (major character death, Jim Gordon/Alfred Pennyworth, Jim Gordon/Barbara Keane, Barbara Keane/Renee Montoya)

The headline makes the picture clear: Police Commissioner Gordon Gunned Down In Heist Gone Wrong, Penguin Still On the Loose.

I know it's been quite some time since I've posted here, but I come bearing recommendations for Dick Grayson fic:

A Spot of Tea by paganpunk2 Alfred and Dick have a common love; tea. A series of shorts centered around a certain butler, Boy Wonder, and beverage. (This story is heartwarming and wonderful. I love the way it focuses on Alfred and Dick's relationship, in all of the varying stages of their time together. And the details about the tea make me even more pleased.)

Instinct by FinalArc Everyone has a breaking point. An off day. Bruce and Dick are on the warpath and Tim just wants to eat his cereal. (A good story that addresses some of the Bat Family issues the comics had always left unresolved. And, I am always a sucker for brother-relationships where these boys are concerned.)

Half Lost, Half Found by takadainmate Driven underground, Batman fights to keep Nightwing alive. There is a fight. There's always a fight. (This is a wonderful Dick and Bruce story, even if Dick is unconscious for a lot of it. It's believably tense, and a great bit of character exploration.)

Oh, no. I have yet another new OT3. Neal/Peter/Elizabeth, here I come...

Jan. 7th, 2015

It's that time again. There are more recs to be had. The flavour of the month: The History Boys (yes, I have come late to this party).

Eight Candles by kaydeefalls Posner doesn't believe, but he lights the candles anyway. They keep the shadows at bay. (Scripps/Posner)

now for a breath i tarry by kaydeefalls Eleven verses Hector never taught them (but Scripps learned anyway). (Scripps/Posner -- and possibly my favourite HB fic out there)

you can't explain away the poetry by kaydeefalls "Right," Dakin said. "It's time we finally relieved you of the terrible burden of your virginity." (Scripps/Posner)

Burn Invisible and Dim by byzantienne DAKIN: Are we scarred for life, you think? / SCRIPPS: We must hope so. Perhaps it will turn me into Proust. (Scripps, Posner, gen)

Will as it Moves towards Deed by yeats The summer after his first year at Oxford, Posner goes back to Sheffield. (Scripps/Posner)

Remaining History by tophatdance Just a rainy Saturday in Durham, and a phone call between Scripps and Posner. (Scripps/Posner, cozy)

to put away childish things by solvent90 "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." (Scripps/Posner, implied Posner/other)

The Accompanist by earis Playing the piano was, in origin, a way to keep out of the muck of things. Unfortunately for Scripps, the muck of things is impossible to escape. (ambiguous gen, Scripps, Posner, Dakin)

Poetry for Professors by linckia_blue The students discuss meanings and feelings and imagery and the use of juxtaposition or other wordy poetic techniques. Posner thinks of Scripps’s morning smile and the shapes his hands trace in the air when he does something he knows will make Posner happy. (Scripps/Posner)

And, to be honest... if anyone can point me in the direction of ace!Scripps fic, I will love you forever. For that matter, just rec me your favourite Scripps fic in general.
I come bearing more recommendations. This time for The Dresden Files. These are mostly based on the television programme, though some of them have book elements. The reasons for that are pretty simple: I've only read a couple of the books so far, I've seen the whole series, and there's Bob. I love Hrothbart-of-Bainbridge!Bob. Not to mention that there are some seriously quality tv-verse stories. So, on to the fic:

A Stirring of Dust by Lady Day A beginning. (gen)

This story features a late-night conversation between Bob and a young Harry. It is very believable and and rather bitter-sweet.

Compulsion by edana_ni_emer Sometimes you don't know your own mind. Sometimes somebody wants to make sure you don't. (Harry/OMCs, Harry/Bob, explicit sex, mind-fuckery)
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11a Part 11b Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19 Part 20 Part 21

I tend to more see the relationship between Bob and Harry as being paternal, as them being each other's only family, than romantic. But this story managed to sell me on a romantic relationship between them. It is full of engaging OCs, a well-thought-out plot, a great Murphy, creepy legacies from Justin Morningway, and a fully tense mystery.

Death and the Necromancer by edana_ni_emer A visitor, through the years. Bob-centric. (crossover with Sandman)

Under the Darkening Sky by kittydesade The last peaceful evening the sorcerer Hrothbert and his lady share before the war. (Hrothbart of Bainbridge/Winifred)

Family by joon Harry's latest case leads him to a criminal about to unlock a dangerous secret. (gen, casefic)

Somnambulist by joon As Harry works on a new case, an old enemy resurfaces. As do painful memories. TVverse with SPOILERS for the entire series. (gen, casefic)

These two stories by joon feel wonderfully like they could be episodes of the show.

may winds and terrors by beachkid fragments, half-pieced together. everything comes from somewhere, but all that we have left are pieces. "in my dripping (pain)/ the blamer may winds and terrors/ carry him off".
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5

This is a thing of beauty. It's supposedly a work in progress, but given the structure it works perfectly fine as is. It is a series of vignettes that jump around the Dresden universe, tying in a large range of characters and a bit of book!verse, and paint a gorgeous picture of the interwoven histories of these characters.

Also, pretty much all of the Dresden Files stories by cyloran are well worth a read. I particularly love her stories about young Harry with Bob. At some point I'll go back through and pick a selection of specific works to rec, but for now I'm just going to leave the link to all of them and say: enjoy!
